Interactive Medical Simulation of the Human Heart (2005-2006)

Copyright Primal Pictures Ltd.

The project aim was to investigate the technical and commercial feasibility of computer-based interactive simulation of the human heart for surgical training and medical education. An experimental research application was developed and served as a proof of concept and a test-bed for the simulation models throughout the research phase.

The major components of the conducted research were:

  • Modelling the cardiac anatomy
  • Extracting myocardium fibre orientations from existing dataset
  • Modelling the specialised cardiac conduction system
  • Simulating the inter-cellular electrical excitation propagation
  • Simulating the mechanical tissue contraction
  • Simulating the electro-mechanical coupling

The project was partially funded by a Research Grant from London Innovation - London Development Agency, UK.
Implementation was based on C/C++ and OpenGL.
Vassili's involvement comprised of proposal writing and lead investigation on behalf of Primal Pictures.
