Virtual Anatomy Trainer for Minimal Access Surgery (2008-2010)

Copyright Primal Pictures Ltd.

Primal Pictures, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and King's College London propose an innovative technology solution to a major challenge in Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) training. The project will develop the world's first low-cost, PC-based 3D visualization of MIS anatomy views, enabling users to comprehend the often disorientating images seen through endoscopes. These 3D views, when incorporated into a software training tool, will provide virtual endoscopy and interactive assessment. The results will enable more surgeons to be trained more effectively - and at significantly lower cost. Surgical tutors estimate that current MIS training time could be cut in half. Importantly, in collaboration with expert tutors at leading universities in the UK, this innovative virtual training environment will be integrated with automated assessment based on the trainee's interactive procedure performance, as well as with cognitive assessment based on Multiple Choice Question tests.

The project is partially funded by a Collaborative R&D Grant from the Technology Programme, Technology Strategy Board, UK.
Vassili's involvement comprises of proposal writing, project consortium coordination and implementation of R&D work-tasks on behalf of Primal Pictures.
